Solstice Snap

by Cynthia Nuzzi

The sun pops up at break of day,
Then winks and says, “I’m here to stay!”
It toasts the toes and melts the shoes,
It boils the bugs and burns the news.

The longest day? Oh, quite the feat
A marathon of solar heat.
The shade’s a myth, your ice will melt,
Your sandals fuse into the veldt.

Yet in this flash of light supreme,
We toast the sun with ice and cream.
As time bends slow in radiant trance
The solstice sings its solar dance
